Beyond its central role as a neurotransmitter, dopamine acts peripherally as a hormone and paracrine signal: it is released by the adrenal medulla and produced in the kidneys and gut, where it promotes renal sodium excretion and vasodilation, modulates gut motility, and inhibits prolactin release from the anterior pituitary.

Reduced renal dopamine signalling is associated with sodium retention and higher blood pressure.

Too much may be associated with

Excess circulating dopamine (e.g. from a catecholamine-secreting tumour) can raise heart rate and blood pressure.
