The primary progestogen, rising after ovulation to prepare and maintain the uterine lining for pregnancy. It balances estrogen, supports early gestation, and has calming, sleep-promoting effects.

Too little may be associated with

Short luteal phase, spotting, difficulty maintaining early pregnancy, and estrogen-dominant symptoms; falling levels trigger menstruation.

Too much may be associated with

Drowsiness, bloating, and low mood (as in the luteal phase or from supplementation).
